Abstract

Portland city residents in 1889 placed a square copper box containing Civil War-period memorabilia underneath a corner of the Our Lady of Victory Monument in Monument Square. Now a group of history buffs wants the box to be recovered. City officials have expressed reservations about recovering the box, citing concern about potential damage to the monument.
