Abstract

Adam Crawford, 9, and Brad Charlton, 5, both students at Houlton Elementary School and both afflicted with cerebral palsy, were once thought to be mentally retarded, but a new method of instruction called Facilitated Communication has shown that the two have IQs above 150. Facilitated Communication involves special machines equipped with keys that represent specific symbols and allows the user to send messages.
