Abstract

A brief filed by Democrats with the Maine Supreme Judicial Court alleges that a Republican reapportionment plan is an attempt to reduce the number of heavily Franco-American state Senate districts, thereby reducing their political power and the power of the Democratic Party, for whom they traditionally vote. The state's highest court is charged with the responsibility of dividing the state into legislative districts based on the 1990 census.
