Abstract

The federal Environmental Protection Agency has said it will propose a rule by mid-January to prohibit the manufacture, processing and distribution of certain types of lead fishing weights because the lead is poisoning birds. Most area dealers of the weights say there is no readily available substitute to the lead sinkers, though L.L. Bean Inc. of Freeport markets a small round sinker made of tin which it claims does not harm birds.
