Abstract

In the coming months, more than 20 million board feet of hemlock and white pine logs will leave Maine and New Hampshire for markets and sawmills in Turkey and China. Log exporters rejoice that new overseas markets are developing for their product, but sawmill operators in the state decry the loss of value-added processing and jobs represented by the export of unfinished lumber.
