Abstract
Menhaden, or pogies as they are sometimes called, during some years account for 40 percent of all Atlantic Coast commercial fish landings by weight. For the first time in several years pogies were absent from the Maine coast, meaning coastal residents were spared the terrible stench of dead pogies and Maine fishermen had to depend on other species for their catch.
