Abstract

Researchers from the University of New Hampshire's Center for Ocean Engineering and the New England Aquarium in Boston are conducting experiments testing different sounds that may keep Gulf of Maine harbor porpoises out of the gill nets of fishermen. An estimated 1,500 to 2,500 harbor porpoises are caught and killed yearly in gill nets in the Gulf of Maine, and the researchers hope to find an acoustical device which will warn the porpoises away from the nets.
