Abstract

The boards of Portland's Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital and Brighton Medical Center yesterday announced that they have agreed to move ahead with the considation of the three hospitals under a single management system. Challenges that still must be confronted in working out a detailed plan for consolidation include how to combine the staffs, how to eliminate duplicate services, and how to ensure uniform medical credentials. The effort to consolidate has drawn national attention.
