Abstract

Poultry farming, Maine's number one agricultural industry in 1979, at one time employed 6,500 workers and generated $90 million annually. When the Maine broiler industry collapsed in the early 1980s, it left some 300 broiler growers in the state with serious debts and no market for their product. Details, related article.
