Abstract

Article about how the adoption of total quality management principles has allowed L.L. Bean to turn around the its boot manufacturing division. Five years ago the division had uncompetitive costs, below-average quality, poor customer service practices and low morale. Last week, the division was awarded the Margaret Chase Smith Maine State Quality Award, Maine's highest award for managment practices.
