Abstract

Paul Vestal, former warden of the Maine State Prison in Thomaston and currently executive director of Maine Advocacy Services, on Tuesday urged the Legislature's Audit Committee to close the maximum-security facility in Thomaston. Vestal said Maine's prison system does not rehabilitate prisoners, and believes the money spent warehousing inmates would be better spent on community-based services.
