Abstract

Don Harper, owner of Whistling Wings Farm in Biddeford, has lost his private-label jam contract with L.L. Bean. According to the Food and Drug Administration, Harper's product contains too much fruit and not enough sugar to be labeled jam. Harper refused to increase the sugar content, so Bean decided to buy from Portland's Schlotterbeck & Foss.
