Abstract

The University of Maine's Pulp and Paper Pilot Plant and Laboratory, built in 1987 for $6 million with state and industry funds, is a fully computerized miniature paper mill where Maine's paper companies go to test new ideas. The pilot plant was originally intended as a teaching tool for the university's chemical engineering students, but has evolved into a partnership between the school, the state and the U.S. pulp and paper industry.
