Abstract

The state Department of Environmental Protection has ordered a 21-day shutdown of the Old Orchard Beach sludge-composting facility, citing poor management practices. The facility takes treated human waste from Old Orchard Beach and Saco and turns it into compost to be sold for commercial landscaping and other uses.
