Abstract

The Kennebec Girl Scout Council of South Portland and the Abnaki Girl Scout Council of Brewer have filed suit against the Maine Bureau of Taxation and Tax Assessor John LeFever, claiming the state has no right to tax the cookies sold during the annual cookie drive. The dispute began last year when the Legislature passed a snack tax, which the non-profit scouting groups say they are exempt from.
