Abstract
The Maine House voted 116-0 and the Senate voted 30-0 in favor of legislation requiring taxpayers who dispute their assessments to pay either the same amount they paid the year before or the current bill minus the disputed amount, whichever is larger. The problem of unpaid taxes has been particularly hard on the city of Bath, which had a substantial amount of its tax base withheld when Bath Iron Works disputed assessments in 1991 and 1992.
