Abstract

The ordeal that ended when the House of Representatives narrowly defeated a call for House Speaker John L. Martin's ouster helped mark the beginning of a new era in the Legislature. With Martin's annouoncement tht this will be his last year as speaker, his power is much weakened and his fellow Democratic legislators will feel freer to vote against him than they have in the past.
