Abstract

The shortage of primary-care physicians is a national problem, but it is especially acute in rural states such as Maine. The shortage could create problems for the shift towards managed care in Maine, which encourages enrollees to choose a family doctor for their medical needs rather than going to a specialist or hospital emergency room.
