Abstract

The Legislature's Appropriations Committee voted 7-6 in favor of maintaining the state's general assistance program, but has tightened qualifications, making it tougher for the needy to receive local welfare checks. The committee also supported a proposal to reduce the state share of the program, which, coupled with the tighter qualifications, will mean $9 million in cuts for the 1994-95 budget.
