Abstract

The recent spell of hot and dry weather has created a major fire hazard throughout Maine, prompting the Maine Forest Service to postpone vacation plans for forest rangers in southern Maine until there is significant rainfall. There have been 475 fires that burned 1,000 acres so far this season. Last year, 770 fires burned 4,500 acres.
