Abstract

Fort Knox, located on a high bluff overlooking the western shore of the Penobscot halfway upriver from Castine to Bangor, cost the U.S. Army nearly $1 million to construct between 1844 and 1864. Water damage to the granite fort has forced the closure of some sections, and current estimates for repairs range between $2 million and $4 million. Details.
