Abstract

A proposal from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to place the Portsmouth Naval shipyard on the Superfund list has prompted objections from the Navy and the state of Maine. Commissioner Dean Marriot of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection has warned that placing the shipyard on the list could jeopardize the transfer of the property to civilian uses should it eventually close.
