Abstract

Congress last week repealed a tax on luxury boats. The tax, approved in 1990 as part of a deficit reduction effort, was expected to raise $3 million in taxes. In fact, the government lost an estimated $15 million when boat customers decided to spend their money on other things. The slump in boatbuilding is believed to have cost about 600 jobs in Maine. Those jobs are now expected to return. Details.
