Abstract

The federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990 requires oil shippers and handlers to develop a national oil-spill response program, including a plan for wildlife rehabilitation. As part of that plan, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife is training biologists and others to treat birds affected by oil spills; looking for sites which can be converted into de-oiling facilities in case of a major spill; and developing a data base of volunteers who would assist in the event of a spill.
