Abstract

Tsuneko Ikemiya, a Japanese professor of English and acoustic phonetics currently visiting the University of Maine in Orono, says that the Down East accent common in coastal and island towns in Maine is actually a version of Old English. Down East humorist Tim Sample, who has studied Maine dialects informally, agrees with Ikemiya, and says that dialect helps distinguish the natives from visitors and is typically difficult to copy.
