Abstract

The Empire Knight, a British steamship used for cargo transport during World War II, sank off of York in 1944 with a load of copper, gun shells, whiskey and possibly 16,000 pounds of mercury on board. The U.S. Coast Guard has hired Sub Sea International Inc. of New Orleans, a salvage company, to determine if the mercury is on board and, if so, to retrieve it. Details.
