Abstract

About 35 volunteers are inventorying Maine's outdoor sculptures. The program, Save Outdoor Sculpture! Maine (SOS! Maine), is an effort of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American Art and the National Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Property to inventory and to identify pieces that are in danger of erosion, vandalism or neglect. Abbe Levin, the Maine project director, estimates that about 300 outdoor sculptures in Maine will require surveying in the next 18 months. With related article about the threat of vandalism.
