Abstract

Long article about the explosive growth of land conservation in Maine since the 1980s. The budget of the Maine Coast Heritage Trust rose by 26 percent this year as programs expanded, and the Maine Department of Conservation has proposed establishing an endowment to help with its rising land management costs. Also focuses on the recent gift to the state by Robert and Mary McCormick of a conservation easement on 100 acres at Butler Point, a valuable habitat for eagles, ducks, and other wildlife.
