Abstract

St. Johnsbury Trucking Co. once did $300 million in business and was the largest trucking company in Maine, but that ended when the company, struggling under the debt of a 1986 leveraged buyout, declared bankruptcy and closed in June of this year. The firms trying to replace St. Johnsbury, such as Preston and Overnite, are struggling with the amount of business and the potential difficulty of maintaining the level of service which accounted for St. Johnsbury's high reputation.
