Abstract

The job of restoring Portland's 105-year-old Henry Wadsworth Longfellow statue began yesterday. The Longfellow Statue Association, headed by Herbert Adams, has raised $11,000 for the project. Among other things, the statue will be "powerwashed," polished with blasts of walnut shell powder, and waxed. Henry Lie of Harvard University is in charge of the restoration. The statute was originally dedicated on September 29, 1882.
