Abstract

Portland Fire Chief Joseph Thomas Jr. has labelled as "suspicious" a fire that destroyed 2 houses, damaged at least three others, and left 26 people homeless. The blaze started on a third-floor porch of the building at 32 Salem Street around 2:30 A.M. yesterday. Firefighters rescued one trapped tenant, who, with the manager of a boarding house, was hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Related stories.
