Abstract

The Navy awarded the six remaining contracts for Sealift cargo ships to National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. of San Diego, postponing for now Bath Iron Work's return to commercial shipbuilding. BIW had hoped to receive one or more contracts for the cargo ships, which the Navy plans to lease to private companies with the understanding that they will be available for military duty when needed.
