Abstract

Maine's moose hunting season opens today for the 1,000 hunters who won permits in a state moose-hunting lottery. The moose population is currently estimated to be 30,000 to 35,000, and the Legislature this year voted to increase the harvest to 1,200 animals next year, 1,400 in 1995, and to 1,500 in 1996.
