Deteriorating conditions at the Colburn House in Pittston, Montpelier in Thomaston and Colonial Pemaquid in Bristol show that Maine's budget problems are having an effect on the state's cultural treasures. Private groups are already playing a role in maintaining and preserving the sites, and some believe that role may expand. Details, related article.
