Abstract

The Damariscotta River Association has been awarded a $455,000 federal grant to secure protection of archaeologically significant shell heaps on the banks of the Damariscotta River in Damariscotta. Of the total amount awarded, $40,000 will be used to document the archaeological significance of the heaps, while the remaining $415,000 will be used to purchase or acquire easements on eight privately held lots where the heaps are located.
