Abstract

Freeport in recent years has changed from a working-class community of shoe factories and neighborhood shops to a trendy bedroom suburb of Portland with a Main Street that caters to shoppers from away. To a growing segment of disenfranchised residents, the changes are detrimental to the community they once knew, and the November 2 election, which features a bloc of four conservatives running for Town Council, offers a means of reclaiming their town.
