Abstract

Recently, the three hospitals in Portland and one in Biddeford determined they could save up to $2.4 million by doing blood tests and other laboratory work in one central lab, and they are now moving in that direction. Although such a level of cooperation is unusual in the hospital industry, where institutions typically compete with each other, many Maine hospitals are realizing that they must work together to survive in the 21st century.
