Abstract
Chesuncook is surrounded by tens of thousands of square miles of privately owned timber land. Millinocket, the closest town, is two hours away. David and Luisa Surprenant run the Lake House Inn and are one of four year-round households. David ferries hunters in during the hunting season. The residents sometimes see UFOs at night and have long since stopped trying to make sense of them. The Katahdin View sporting lodge and the Lake House hold the only commercial permits in the town. There is some tension between the owners of the two lodges, as there is among various residents. It is rare that residents act in concert, but occasionally they do.
