Abstract
Maine lobstermen in 1994 hauled in more than 40 million pounds of lobster worth $100 million, indicating there is a healthy industry out there. Federal biologists say lobsters are being overfished, and point to the 2 million traps being deployed in Maine waters. Some in the lobster industry are chlorining female lobsters bearing eggs, which legally should be thrown back. The saltwater and chlorine solution in which the females are dipped washes away the eggs and leaves a virtually undetectable scrubbed lobster. Details.
