Abstract

A study conducted at the Geographic Information Systems Laboratory at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor estimates Maine's coast to be at least 7,039.71 statute miles. The study, done in conjunction with the state GIS office and the departments of Environmental Protection and Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, used United State Geographic Survey maps that were converted into digital files. The traditional measurement of the Maine coast is 3,600 statute miles.
