Abstract

Moose River Lumber of Jackman saws dimensional spruce framing lumber for the construction industry, and is the largest employer in town. Owner Charlie Lumbert has temporarily closed the sawmill, saying it is impossible to compete against imports of subsidized Canadian lumber. Lumbert charges that Canadian mills operate with lower expenses and buy raw logs at reduced rates from national and provincial lands. Lloyd Irland, a forestry consultant, says a rush of private landowners who were willing to sell and a downturn in housing starts have resulted in a glut of timber in the market. Details.
