Abstract
Steve Spencer, recreation specialist for the Maine Bureau of Public Lands, says the Eco-Challenge race caused no measurable damage to the environment. But Appalachian Trail officials contend that race founder Mark Burnett broke an agreement with them over use of the Bigelow Preserve. The federal Bureau of Land Management plans to charge Eco-Challenge for violating permit conditions when the endurance event was held in Utah.
