Abstract

The Baxter State Park Authority has decided against conducting a study in the park to determine why pine marten are being discovered in unexpected forest habitats. The project would have sampled the marten's prey, and was opposed by park officals and forest advocates because many of the shrews and small mammals targeted would die in traps. Ray Owen, authority chairman and commissioner of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, supported the study but withdrew his endorsement after conceding that his vote created the appearance of conflict of interest.
