Jerry Genesio of Portland, founder of Veterans for Peace, organized VFP's Children of War project, which in 1993 began arranging evacuation for children injured in the fighting in the former Yugoslavia. The project resulted in 39 children receiving free medical care in hospitals across the United States, and Genesio's efforts won him awards from Amnesty International and the Holocaust Human Rights Center of Maine. Genesio has not evacuated a single child since December 1994, and he says the U.S. Department of State is responsible for shutting down the project. Details, related article on the assistance Genesio received from former U.S. senator George Mitchell and former U.S. representative Thomas Andrews.
