Abstract
Just as basketmaking is enjoying a resurgence among Maine's four Wabanaki tribes, the brown ash, the tree from which the baskets are made, is disappearing. The best Maine plots of brown ash are showing dieback rates of 20 to 30 percent, while the worst show rates as high as 80 percent. The Maine Forest Service and the four tribes have joined forces to create the Brown Ash Task Force to study the problem. Details.
