Abstract

Maine is the only state in the country's history to elect two independent governors within two decades. While there are a number of similarities between James B. Longley Sr., Maine's 67th governor, and Gov. Angus S. King Jr., the state's 71st chief executive, the differences between the two are more important. Longley was confrontational in all his dealings with the Maine Legislature, while King has proven expertly non-confrontational. Details.
