Abstract

Many Maine observers are convinced that the mountain lion, last recorded in the state in 1938, has returned. A bear hunter from Pennsylvania shot and killed a wolf in the state in 1993, claiming he thought it was a coyote. Both hunters and supporters of the predators want the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife to develop policies and regulations to deal with the presence of wolves and mountain lions in the state. Department officials are not convinced that viable breeding populations of the animals are established in Maine. Details.
