Abstract
The Maine Legislature last session voted to forfeit the state's claim on abandoned beverage-container deposits, which to date have amounted to $2.7 million of revenue. The consensus in the Legislature is that administrative costs and refunds for over-redemption outweighed keeping the so-called escheat provision, but opponents argue that the consensus was built almost exclusively on beverage industry data. Many bottle bill advocates fear that the beverage industry is quietly trying to kill the bottle bill, mainly due to concern about expansion to other states. Details.
