Abstract

Maine had a robust cranberry trade for around 100 years, but it had just about died by the end of the 1950s. Jim Harker of the Maine Department of Agriculture said the state has been trying for the last eight years to encourage cranberry growth, but there are only 23 growers and 60 acres of cranberry patches in Maine. Farmers interested in growing cranberries packed three meeting rooms at the Maine Agricultural Trades Show in Augusta last week, and though optimistic about the market some expressed concerns about financing and start-up costs.
