Abstract

The change from transportation of wood by water to transportation by truck has had a significant impact on the character of the Maine forest. Some 25,000 miles of logging roads crisscross the forest, surpassing in length the 22,500 miles of Maine's public highway network. The increased access has resulted in recreational pressures, and a difference in use and kind of visitors. Landowners are concerned that heavier recreational use could prompt the Maine Land Use Regulation Commission to propose more regulations that will interfere with the harvesting of trees.
